He’s made homages to his roots before, having made an album around 1988 called Born 2B Blue in which he acknowledged his influences. This is a sort of follow-up to that in that it reflects his apprenticeship in the blues. Its fun to hear him play this type of music; its nice to hear those licks and hear the voice, but beyond the nostalgia…well, there are some good licks. Its the same kind of album that’s been put out several times over in the genre. The writing is as simple as it gets (all the songs are covers). If you don’t already have dozens of albums that sound exactly like this one, then go for it. Blues afficienados don’t mind buying the same album over and over anyway, so it may ‘catch fire’ yet. Guest vocalist Sonny Charles helps beef up the vocals and lends authenticity on some songs. Sweet Soul Vibe and All Your Love (I Miss Lovin) are cool songs that should please SMB fans, but this album doesn’t come close to visiting the psychadelic space blues Miller helped pioneer way back when. Anyone looking for an album like Sailor, Brave New World or Children Of The Future should move along.

i saw steve miller twice a few yrs ago. both times the crowd jumped to their feet to dance and spill their beers when “fly like an eagle etc”. was played. i like the hits but when a fine fine blues tune came on…instantly people talked, headed to the refreshment bar, and were mostly disengaged. when steve was still a teen he became the guitarist for jr. wells. his blues chops are real. this album is a great collection of those blues tunes. dig “oo-poo-pah-doo”.

Welcome back Steve and the gang! The disc I bought from a local store is Excellent, though I had initially thought only 10 songs was unusual for these days. I chalked it up to Steve being from the old Rock school when 10 songs was the norm. Now I see he has a special disc with 4 extra songs! WHAT A BUMMER! Corporate (or the artist’s) greed at it’s best? Now I have to go out and buy that disc. Well, on second thought, maybe I WON’T!

This would have been a 5 star review but my feeling of being ripped off makes me want to give it a 3, so I averaged it to a 4. STEVE! Come on BROTHER! How would YOU feel if you were me, a fan for years?

  4. Been a Steve Miller fan since the late 60s and this CD ranks up there with his best work. The album is all covers (which isn’t necessarily bad = all bluesy or blues rock). This is superior to Born 2B Blue and is one of those rare records that does not have a bad track on it (personally recommend Hey Yeah, Tramp, Sweet Soul Vibe, All Your Loving, OOO Poo Pah Doo, Let The Good Times Roll, Look On Yonder Wall). The playing is excellent (Steve and the band do many of these songs on tour) and tight. Upbeat songs, up beat CD. Dedicated to Norton Buffalo who passed away in the fall of last year and was a long time member of the band. Recommend the Special Edition with the extra songs (worth it). First rate stuff – you won’t regret the investment.

  5. If this CD doesn’t bring a smile to your face you’d better check to make sure you still have a pulse. What many of us – including me – didn’t know about Miller during his pop haydays with jet aero planes and the other good stuff is he was and is formost a guitar player. (Started out playing rhythm for Buddy Guy which wasn’t too shabby.) Songs here are jump blues and R&B types including two from Jimmie Vaughan and two from Jimmy Reed, plus one from Elmore James. Bingo is a must for guitar freaks – great playing, huge tone and superbly engineered. (On the Elmore song they totally nail his guitar sound.) Uncle Joe Satriani sits in on two songs, a nice testament to the quality of the playing in Miller’s band. You can tell these guys have been playing this material for a long time – every nuance is perfect and it’s about the tightest playing one can hear. Great fun to listen to, get yourself a copy.
